Fonte: Austin goal was pure fate

Saints skipper José Fonte says it was “written in the stars” for Charlie Austin to grab a debut goal and see off Manchester United.

The striker, signed the previous weekend, scored within eight minutes of coming on as a substitute to secure a last-gasp victory at Old Trafford.

And Fonte was far from surprised to see the squad’s latest addition making an immediate impact.

“It was written in the stars that Charlie Austin would come on and score from a good set piece,” said the Portuguese international. “That’s what he is capable of.

“You couldn’t ask for more. You know what you’re going to get with Charlie – it’s something that’s automatic to him.

“We were really strong mentally and kept digging away and he came on to a get a good winner.

“It was great for him to come on and get us the goal. It’s a really good three points for us and the perfect debut for him.”
