Olomola targets a response

Under-18s skipper Olufela Olomola says the whole team must step up and take responsibility to get their season back on track.

Saints’ youngsters head to West Ham United on Saturday morning on a run of six consecutive defeats following last weekend’s 3-2 reverse at Brighton where a late goal from a defensive error punished the team.

“We’re all very disappointed, but we’ve analysed the game and talked about what we did wrong and what we did well and now it’s time to move on to West Ham this weekend,” Olomola told youtube.com/southamptonfc

“It was very, very frustrating that we conceded so late, but we have to defend better and that’s something we’re working on in training every day.

“It’s a team effort,” he added. “We defend as a team and we attack as a team, so it’s not just the back four, it’s throughout the whole team that we, including myself, need to work on.”

Many of the defeats in that run have been by a slender margin, but Olomola feels if Saints keep working hard then something will drop for them.

“We’re not a million miles away,” he said. “We’ve still got bits to improve like every team has, but we’re not far away.

“We take every game as it comes and don’t think about what we’ve done, because what we’re going to do is important.

“As a captain it is important that I am a good role model and that I lead by example, and that extra responsibility has helped me this year to become a better player as well.”

On Saturday, Olomola hopes that Saints can avenge their defeat to West Ham from earlier in the season, and is prepared for whatever conditions come their way.

“They’re going to be very physical,” Olomola highlighted. “We know that West ham have good individual players and they’ll be in our faces, they won’t give us any time on the ball. I know their pitch is very tight as well so it could be a scrappy game, so we need to win the battle and hopefully afterwards we can let the football come in.

“As a footballer, you’ve got to be prepared for all conditions and don’t let the conditions affect you, and, as a player – you have to be able to adapt, as that’s what the best players can do.”
