José Fonte has been named in the latest Portugal squad – his first-ever senior international call-up.
The Saints defender is included in Fernando Santos’s first selection as manager of the national team ahead of a friendly against France and a UEFA EURO 2016 qualifier against Denmark.
30-year-old Fonte’s only previous international involvement came at under-21 level, playing in a 1-1 draw with Slovenia in January 2006.
First up for the Selecção is that friendly against France, which takes place at the Stade de France on Saturday 11th October at 7.45pm BST and could see Fonte take on Saints teammate Morgan Schneiderlin, who has been called up by Les Bleus.
Then comes a EURO 2016 qualifier against Denmark at Copenhagen’s Telia Parken stadium on Tuesday 14th October at 7.45pm BST.
Portugal’s Group I qualifying campaign started badly with a 1-0 home loss to Albania, so Fonte and his teammates will be keen to bounce back against the early group leaders.
Fonte, who is the 13th Southampton player to be called up for this month’s international fixtures, will return to the club ahead of the home game against Sunderland on Saturday 18th October.
