Wanyama's Kenya out of AFCON contention

There was disappointment for Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama on Sunday afternoon as Kenya crashed out of qualifying for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Wanyama played the entirety of this afternoon’s goalless draw against Lesotho as the Harambee Stars failed to overturn a first-leg deficit to go out 1-0 on aggregate in the second qualifying round.

The Saints man had also played the full game of that first-leg defeat in Maseru two weeks ago, as Tšepo Seturumane’s 65th-minute goal settled matters.

And that goal proved decisive this afternoon as Kenya failed to find a way past a side 36 places lower in the FIFA world rankings at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi.

Wanyama, who made his first domestic appearance of pre-season in Thursday’s win over Brighton, will now return to Southampton as the team enters the final fortnight of its preparations for the new Barclays Premier League campaign.
