Lambert’s fingers are crossed

Rickie Lambert says the next 24 hours will be the most anxious wait of his entire life as he awaits a call over England’s World Cup squad.

Roy Hodgson’s announcement will be made on Monday, and Lambert, who scored in the final game of the season in front of the England manager, concedes that it will be a nervous time before the news breaks.

“(It will) probably the most anxious wait in my entire life,” he told reporters after the game.

"It will mean more to me than anything else that’s ever happened in football and something that I would always remember for the rest of my life.

“The last two years have been a dream and it’s how I’ve always dreamt how my career would go. It didn’t seem to be going that way and then all of a sudden it’s gone as I would have wished for and more.

“I’m confident that I’ll be in the 30 (squad) but I don’t know if I’ll be in the 23 yet,” he added.

“It was good that he [Roy Hodgson] was here today, he’s been here all season. It’s something that might have affected me last season, but he’s shown to everyone that he’ll pick from any club.

“It will be the biggest thing in my life right now. When I’m 75 or 80 it will be something to look back on and tell the grandchildren about until the ends of time so that they don’t want to listen. I’ll always be able to say I went to a World Cup and that means as much to me as it does to anyone else.”
