Fans on course to raise £18,000

28 Saints fans took part in the fourth annual Big Bike Challenge over the Easter weekend to raise funds for the Saints Foundation.

Participants took on a two-day gruelling 150-mile cycle ride from St Mary's to Villa Park, and to date funds raised have passed the £18,000 mark!

Among the group was Saints Chairman Ralph Krueger, who took on the challenge at short notice to demonstrate his commitment to the Charity and, despite the rolling hills of England’s countryside, thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

"Taking part in the Big Bike Challenge 2014 provided me with an opportunity to experience the impressive inner workings of the Saints Foundation first hand," he said.

"This insight, combined with the knowledge that we were increasing the awareness and visibility of the Foundation, motivated me to push hard for all 150-plus miles.

"It was a bonus that I was able to bond with the 27 Saints supporters that also took part in the ride. Spending time with them helped to deepen my insight into what Saints fans find important regarding the Club.

"We all crossed the finish line with big smiles knowing that the funds we raised will be well invested back into our community, helping underprivileged individuals of all ages improve the quality of their lives."

Funds raised from the weekend will support three projects across the Foundation programme – Saints-Ability (Disability football), Saints4Sport (vulnerable adults) and Saints Connect (young people), all of which directly support disadvantaged young people and vulnerable adults in the Southampton community.

Katie Skelton took part and added: "158 miles across five counties over two days with some of the most brilliant people I've ever met. The feeling of elation at seeing Villa Park as we approached the finish line was amazing, especially after being so tired and sore after day one! I have met some friends for life and it makes me so proud to be part of such a fantastic club and charity."

Becky Davies, Events Officer for the Saints Foundation, commented: "The event was a great success and we can’t thank the participants enough for their hard work, enthusiasm and commitment with their training and fundraising efforts, it was a great weekend."

The Saints Foundation will be organising the Big Bike Challenge for the 2014/15 season once the new season’s fixtures are published.  If you would like to take part email or call 0845 6889370.
