Ryan pleased to repay Hunter

Ryan Seager felt his goal in Saints Development Squad’s 3-0 win over Fulham in his first Under-21 start since November capped a fine personal display.

The forward justified coach Martin Hunter’s decision to deploy him as part of a three-pronged attack including Sam Gallagher and Sam McQueen – who also netted – by opening the scoring in the fourth minute at Staplewood on Wednesday afternoon.

Seager is refusing to rest on his laurels and is hoping to maintain his form on the training pitch in order to see his name in the starting eleven against Norwich next Monday.

“Obviously it was nice to start,” the striker told Saints Player. “I haven’t started in a while for the U21s, so to start and get a goal is really good. I thought the lads were great.

“I’ve been a substitute for the U21s [recently], so getting that game-time with the Under-18s has really helped me get my match fitness up. I think that showed today.

“I thought I did well, considering I haven’t been at my best this season. That was a really good performance from me. I put a lot of hard work into that and I think most of the things I did came off pretty well.

“I’ve just got to keep doing it now and keep that consistency up and hopefully I’ll get picked for the next game.”

Seager was delighted to see the attacking trio forge a clinical force and admitted his confidence in their ability to send Saints on their way to all three points.

The youngster paid tribute to midfielder and friend Jake Hesketh for another late U21 cameo appearance after scoring against the Cottagers’ U18s last Saturday.

Seager said of the front-three’s combination: “It was great – we combined well. We do it on the training pitch and it was good to see that we could do it in a game.

“I thought we were coming up against a strong defence but we’re confident in our own ability. We knew that we’d always score goals and we defended well, so we always knew that we’d win.

“He (Jake Hesketh) is doing really well in training, so it’s good for him to get a few minutes here and there. He’s doing really well.”
