Rodriguez to use England experience

Jay Rodriguez says he’ll take plenty away from his first involvement with the senior England set-up.

Rodriguez may have been restricted to just 56 minutes of the game against Chile, but he’s taken value out of the training sessions and all-round experiences that have given him a glimpse of what it takes to feature regularly for his country.

“It’s been unbelievable - a great experience to learn from,” he highlighted after last night's game against Germany. “It’s been a great experience all round, really – just a shame about the results.

“You can tell how good the players are and you just want to try and improve your own game as much as you can [by] using the experience, which has been great for me.

“You always want to get on the pitch but it’s one of those things, so now I’ll just carry on.”

Of his club teammates who did get some game time on Tuesday, Rodriguez felt both Adam Lallana and Rickie Lambert handled their respective tasks perfectly.

“It was a really good performance aside from the result obviously, but I thought we played really well, and Ads did really well,” Jay said.

“He (Lallana) always does, he’s a great player and he did really well tonight.

“Whenever Rickie gets on the pitch he looks a threat and he was again today I thought, but there wasn’t a lot he could do really.”

Jay will hope to put his ‘fresher’ legs to use in Saints’ game against Arsenal on Saturday, and he’s confident that the team will fare better than last season’s heavy defeat against the Gunners.

“Of course I’m looking forward to that game, it’s going to be a great game and we’re going to take it to Arsenal so it’ll be a great occasion,” he stated.

“Last year was a nightmare to get beat 6-1 there, but we’ve got a point to prove and we’ll go there looking to do that.”
