Gastón Ramírez took a big step towards the 2014 FIFA World Cup earlier today as Uruguay recorded a resounding win over Jordan in the away leg of their inter-confederation qualifying play-off.
The Saints man came on after 70 minutes with his country having just gone three goals to the good when Nicolás Lodeiro added to first-half strikes from Maximiliano Pereira and Christian Stuani.
Cristian Rodríguez notched the fourth soon afterwards, before Edinson Cavani rounded off a 5-0 victory in injury time at the Amman International Stadium.
Ramírez and his teammates now head back to Uruguay for the home leg knowing that only a dramatic change of fortunes will prevent them qualifying for next summer’s finals in Brazil.
The second leg takes place at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo next Wednesday at 11pm GMT.
