Adam Lallana says he’s been inspired by the achievements of Rickie Lambert with England and aims to follow in the striker’s footsteps on the international stage.
Lallana was called into the senior Three Lions squad for the first time last year when Ukraine were the visitors to Wembley Stadium last September. He was amongst the substitutes that did not get on the pitch twelve months ago, and although the Saints skipper impressed the national coaching staff, he has not been involved at that level since.
Meanwhile, Adam’s Saints teammate Rickie Lambert has made an impressive late rise into the senior set up, something which has given Lallana an incentive over the coming months.
“It’s an ambition for the future,” he stated.
“I’ve been playing with Rickie for however many years and it’s normal for him to be called up now.
“It’s brilliant, and it’s something that I’d like to emulate as I’ve got someone who is kind of living the dream that I play with, so I just aspire to him and I’d love to do what he has achieved. I’m delighted for him at the minute and with the club picking up results it’s been.”
Lallana is not expecting a call however, and stressed that he will be looking to maintain his current good form for Southampton. He was a pivotal figure in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Swansea City after scoring the opening goal that put the hosts on their way to a third consecutive win in the Barclays Premier League.
“It would be a bonus for me,” he admitted. “I’m quite happy with just concentrating on my club form and playing week in-week out for Saints.”

The skipper earned praise for his all-round performance in the win over Swansea, as his work-rate off the ball was equally impressive as the composure he showed for his goal in the 19th minute of the game.
“It’s just part of my game,” he shrugged. “I always feel that I work hard especially under this manager, it’s a part of my game that I’ve naturally improved on because it’s how he wants us to play.
“I think everyone wants to play on the front foot and press hard and work hard, it’s as simple as that.”
