Punch’s Instinct

By SFC Media Wed 16 Jan Club

Jason Puncheon described his wonder goal as pure ‘instinct’ as he helped Southampton to a 2-2 draw at Chelsea with a 75th minute strike.

The winger capped a fine comeback from the visitors to earn a share of the spoils in West London as he swung a fierce volley into the top corner from Luke Shaw’s cross which bounced off Gaston Ramirez and perfectly into his path.

“It was instinct really,” Puncheon said. “I knew that the ball was going to bounce up and once I took a touch I knew it would sit up for me so I just hit it right and it went in.

“It’s always good to get a goal but the most important thing was to get something from the game.

“This is a massive point for us especially away at a place like Chelsea.

“It’s twelve games that we’ve got 18 points from now,” he continued. “And, if you compare that with the first five or ten matches then there’s a big difference which is good to see, and we’re all buzzing really.”

The comeback began when Rickie Lambert came off the bench to pull a goal back within three minutes of getting onto the pitch, and Jason said he was inspired by the frontman’s strike.

“It was a great reaction,” Puncheon explained. “I was just thinking that when he scored. I was like ‘wow’ and the fans’ reaction showed what a good decision it was and one which has affected the game as we’ve gone on and got a point.”

Importantly, Saints didn’t cave in despite going two goals down at the break, and Puncheon highlighted that was a feature the squad have been looking to improve upon.

“It was a lesson we learnt after the FA Cup game and from the top teams that we’ve faced this season when we’ve crumbled a bit.

“We showed our character in the second half, that’s the belief that we need to have and it’s the belief that we’ve got now.”
