Birthday Boy Steven: We Could Have Won

By SFC Media Tue 01 Jan Club

Steven Davis celebrated his 28th birthday with a point against Arsenal – and admitted Saints could well have taken all three.

The Northern Ireland captain returned to the team to put in an industrious performance at the heart of the midfield as his side held their own against the Gunners.

And, after a dominant second-half showing, Davis said he was pleased to have drawn against a team that won 7-3 against Arsenal four days ago – and added that a win was not far away.

"After Arsenal's result against Newcastle, we knew they'd be coming into this game full of confidence but I thought we limited them really well in terms of them creating chances," he told Saints Player.

"We thoroughly deserved a point at least, and there's a little bit of disappointment that we didn't go on to win the game.

"They didn't have too many clear-cut openings and, in terms of our own balance between attack and defence, I thought we did really well.

"Every point is going to be valuable come the end of the season," added the 28 year-old.

"We've had some decent performances over the Christmas period and have been a bit unlucky not to pick up points away at Stoke.

"If we keep performing in the way we have been, we'll start to turn some of those draws into wins.

"We're not getting carried away and we know there's still a long way to go in the season. There are a lot of tough fixtures to come, so we just have to keep putting in the same effort in every game.

"I think we've shown we can compete at this level on a consistent basis, so we need to keep doing that – and hopefully that will take us up the table to avoid relegation."
