Good Week For International Saints

By SFC Media Thu 15 Nov Club

Our international players are returning to Southampton having all enjoyed positive results with their countries on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Nine Saints stars headed away to join up with their compatriots earlier this week, with none of them suffering defeat in their respective matches.

The first players in action were James Ward-Prowse, Jack Stephens and Calum Chambers for England Under-19s in a friendly against Finland at AFC Telford United's New Bucks Head Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Ward-Prowse and Stephens started the game, with the former playing the first 69 minutes and the latter being replaced by Chambers at the break. The game ended 1-0 to the hosts courtesy of a late penalty.

Also playing on Tuesday evening was defender Nathaniel Clyne, who came off the bench for the last half-hour of England Under-21s' friendly win over Northern Ireland at Blackpool's Bloomfield Road ground.

Maya Yoshida was the first of our players to be involved at senior international level this week, when he started Japan's 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier against Oman on Wednesday.

The defender helped the Samurai Blue to a 2-1 win at the Sultan Qaboos Spors Complex in Muscat to move them to within one match of qualifying for the 2014 finals in Brazil.

Emmanuel Mayuka started for Zambia in their Nelson Mandela Challenge Cup game against South Africa at the 94,700-seater FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

And the striker contributed to an impressive 1-0 win for the Chipolopolo as they prepare to defend their Africa Cup of Nations title in January and February.

Steven Davis captained Northern Ireland as they scored deep into injury time to secure a 1-1 draw with Azerbaijan in Belfast in their FIFA 2014 World Cup European Qualifier.

Gastón Ramírez played the second half of Uruguay's 3-1 friendly win over Poland at the PGE Arena in Gdańsk.

Alberto Seidi – currently out on loan at Aldershot Town – did not make the matchday squad for Portugal's Under-21s as they beat Scotland 3-2 in Setúbal.

The players will now return to Southampton ahead of Saturday's trip to Queens Park Rangers.
