we controlled 70 minutes of the game but we need to control the full 90. that's the lesson for us - to be focused for the whole game and stay compact. we need to stick together, take the positives from this game and improve what was wrong. i still think we have a big chance to stay up.jan bednareksouthampton defender

FULL TIME: Southampton 2-3 Chelsea
It's a devastating defeat for Saints, who were well on course for a much-needed three points, as goals from Dušan Tadić and Jan Bednarek had Mark Hughes en route to victory in his first home game in charge. Instead, substitute Olivier Giroud halved the deficit, before Eden Hazard equalised and Giroud fired home his second 12 minutes from time. A very tough one to take.
Yellow Card for Gary Cahill (Chelsea)
It's a cynical tackle from Cahill, who is quite happy to take a booking for a crude foul on Long near the halfway line.
Five added minutes...
The fourth official's board is greeted by a roar from the Saints fans, who are nearly celebrating seconds later as Sims breaks through, only to be denied by Courtois.
Courtois saves from Højbjerg
With three minutes to go, Bertrand's corner is met by Højbjerg, but his header is too close to Courtois. What can Saints produce in the closing stages? Time is not on our side now...
Yellow Card for Willian Borges Da Silva (Chelsea)
Willian goes into the book for a foul on Højbjerg.
Yellow Card for Shane Long (Southampton)
Long lunges in on Pedro and receives a yellow card.
Giroud turns the game on its head
Quite incredible. Suddenly Saints find themselves behind, as they struggle to clear Hazard's cross and the ball drops kindly for Giroud to bury a low shot into the bottom corner that leaves McCarthy no chance.
Olivier Giroud (78’) | Southampton 2 – 3 Chelsea
Yellow Card for Oriol Romeu (Southampton)
Romeu goes into the book for bringing down Alonso in full flight.
Hazard strikes the equaliser
That's a bitter pill to swallow. From a position of control, Saints have let a two-goal lead slip. Willian's quick feet buys the Brazilian time to produce a low cross, from which Hazard takes a touch and dispatches a clinical finish high into McCarthy's net.
Eden Hazard (74’) | Southampton 2 – 2 Chelsea
Giroud halves the deficit
Now Saints face a nervous last 20 minutes. Alonso crosses from the left and substitute Giroud powers a header into the bottom corner - just as he did in an Arsenal shirt at St Mary's back in December. Stand firm, boys.
Olivier Giroud (69’) | Southampton 2 – 1 Chelsea
We're midway through the second half...
Saints are three-quarters of the way there. Jan Bednarek's goal has given Mark Hughes's side a two-goal cushion at St Mary's. Still work to be done 💪
Yellow Card for Eden Hazard (Chelsea)
Chelsea's go-to man is the first Blues player into Mike Dean's book as the visitors' frustrations increase.
BEDNAREK SCORES ON HIS PREMIER LEAGUE DEBUT!
What a moment! Ward-Prowse delivers a deep free kick from the right that finds its way through to Bednarek at the far post, who finishes with a cool sidefoot volley! One to savour for the youngster!
Jan Bednarek (59’) | Southampton 2 – 0 Chelsea
McCarthy twice denies Chelsea
The Blues are applying more pressure now. Hazard works a yard of space in the box to shoot towards the near post from a tight angle, but McCarthy gets down smartly, before Fabregas tees up Willian to strike low from 20 yards. This time the keeper is less convincing, but still pushes the ball to safety with Hazard lurking dangerously.
So close to 2-0!
Chelsea have been in the ascendancy at the start of the second half, but Højbjerg's ball over the top releases Long on the counter. Despite losing his footing, the striker still keeps the chance alive and in the end his miss-hit shot loops into the air and forces a vital tip over the bar from Courtois with his defence stretched.
Morata shoots over
The ball is laid off for Morata, but the striker sends an ambitious first-time shot sailing into the stand behind McCarthy's goal. Chelsea know they must improve in this second half.
We're back under way!
Saints have kicked off and the action resumes at St Mary's. More of the same required! 👊
HALF TIME: Southampton 1-0 Chelsea
So far, so good. Saints lead at the interval through Dušan Tadić's 21st minute goal at St Mary's, created by a defence-splitting pass from Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and a lung-busting run into the box from Ryan Bertrand against his former club. Chelsea have shown glimpses, but failed to create anything really clear cut. Keep it up, lads! 😇
Three minutes of added time...
After Saints defend Willian's free kick, Fabregas's shot from distance takes a looping deflection and drops wide. Then Christensen heads off target from a Hazard cross. And breathe...
Long goes down injured...
Mark Hughes isn't happy, as play is allowed to continue while Long is down, and only stops when referee Mike Dean awards the visitors a free kick in dangerous territory. That will have to wait while the striker receives treatment.
Yoshida heads wide
Having survived Chelsea's brief flurry, Saints are ending the first half on top. Ward-Prowse swings in a free kick from deep that Yoshida meets with a stooping header but cannot hit the target.
Courtois denies Ward-Prowse!
Another Saints attack, as this time Ward-Prowse does get the ball and the opportunity to go for goal himself. He forces a save from Courtois down to the keeper's right, before Tadić pounces on the rebound only to be flagged offside. The Chelsea stopper denied him, too.
Long tries his luck from distance
Saints have had to get through Chelsea's best spell of the half, but now launch a counter-attack as Hazard is dispossessed. Long leads the breakaway and uses the run of Ward-Prowse, as space opens up in front of the Irishman to shoot from 30 yards, but it sails harmlessly wide. More positive intent nonetheless.
Crucial touch from McCarthy!
Willian's inswinging corner from the left is surely heading in, either directly or via the onrushing Christensen, but McCarthy gets the slightest touch in front of the Dane to keep Chelsea at bay.
Morata heads over
Just as Saints look in command, Chelsea manufacture their best chance of the game. Kante delivers a deep cross nodded back across goal by Zappacosta and headed over by Morata, as Saints claim a foul that's not given.
Long crosses dangerously
The ever-willing Long drifts out to the left and delivers a wicked cross that swings in towards the Chelsea goal and only just eludes the stretching Cédric. Saints are on top!
What a goal! Højbjerg's brilliant pass splits the right side of Chelsea's defence and releases Bertrand, who gallops into the box and holds off Azpilicueta with a barnstorming run, before keeping his composure to cut the ball back for Tadić to finish from six yards!
Dušan Tadić (20’) | Southampton 1 – 0 Chelsea
Chelsea free kick comes to nothing
Marauding wing-back Alonso is brought down and it's a set-piece from the left delivered by Willian, which skips up off the turf and runs through to the grateful McCarthy.
McCarthy claims easily
It's a first corner of the game for Chelsea, who take it short and work the ball back to Fabregas, but his floated cross is straight into the arms of McCarthy.
Cédric gets in the way
First decent opening for Chelsea, who temporarily find themselves two against two on the attack. Morata feeds Hazard to his left, who tries to cut inside and shoot, but Cédric intervenes with an important block.
Saints on the front foot
It's been a positive start to Mark Hughes's first home game in charge. Bertrand and Tadić have both found promising crossing positions down the left, but just been found wanting with the final ball. No chances at either end as yet.
