MUN vs Saints As It Happened
Key moments so far
- Saints holding their own at Old Trafford
- United lose top scorer Lukaku to injury early on
- De Gea saves twice from Ward-Prowse and once from Long
- McCarthy starts in goal for Saints
FULL TIME: Manchester United 0-0 Southampton
It finishes goalless! A great point for Saints, who fully deserved a share of the spoils. David De Gea was probably the busier keeper, making important saves from James Ward-Prowse (twice) and Shane Long. It's a clean sheet for Alex McCarthy on his first Premier League appearance for the club. Well done, lads 👏
Saints are really hanging on now! One added minute remains...
Three added minutes...
There's your answer, with United finishing strongly. Stand tall, Saints!
Into the final minute of normal time...
United are turning the screw but everything they throw at Saints gets repelled. How many minutes will be added on?
Six minutes to go!
Saints have done a great job in blunting the United attack. Can we hang on for a point, or even snatch all three? It wouldn't be unjust on the balance of play...
Offside flag denies Pogba
Mata delivers a free kick from a dangerous position. The ball bounces around in the Saints box and is eventually prodded in from close range by Pogba, but the flag is up to deny the Frenchman.
Yellow Card for James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)
Another booking for Saints, as this time Ward-Prowse is cautioned.
Stephens denies Shaw
United launch a more threatening attack as Shaw gets in down the left, but Stephens slides in to block his cross and concede a corner. Again, Saints deal with the set-piece as the home fans get increasingly frustrated with their team's inability to create.
Tadić goes close again
Long seemed to stop as if he thought he was offside as Saints build another attack, but he lays the ball off for Tadić to shoot first time. His side-footed effort from 20 yards rolls a couple of yards wide. Saints are posing the bigger goal threat here. Keep going, boys! 😇
Yellow Card for Nemanja Matic (Manchester United)
Matić is cautioned for bringing down Tadić as his compatriot skipped past him.
Tadić heads over
Saints still carry a threat on the break, as Boufal crosses but it's just fractionally behind Tadić, who can't keep his header down from ten yards.
Matić shoots wildly
Matić tries his luck from fully 35 yards but it flies a long way over the bar. United look short of ideas as Saints continue to frustrate the hosts.
Three-quarters of the game gone...
It's still goalless here at Old Trafford. United are starting to push more for the lead, but Alex McCarthy still has not had to make a really notable save to keep them at bay.
Young's free kick deflects wide
Martial immediately wins a free kick with his quick feet 25 yards from goal. Young shoots, but it takes a nick of the Saints wall and goes behind for a corner which is dealt with.
De Gea goes down injured
Ward-Prowse whips in a free kick towards Yoshida, which forces De Gea to punch the ball clear. The Spaniard clatters into Jones, but he's fine to continue.
Yellow Card for Sofiane Boufal (Southampton)
Boufal is the third Saints player to go into Craig Pawson's notebook, seemingly for a collection of fairly innocuous offences rather than one in particular.
Mkhitaryan forces a save
Mkhitaryan has been wasteful at times on his return to the United starting line-up, but this time he steps inside from the left and hits the target with a low shot. It's easily held by McCarthy.
Easy catch for McCarthy
United force two corners. The first is met with an important defensive header by Yoshida, who puts it behind for another, which Mata sends straight into the arms of McCarthy. José Mourinho's side do not look a huge threat on this form, but Saints must maintain their concentration.
De Gea saves from Long
Ward-Prowse crosses low from the right and Long is sharply on to it. He gets in front of Matić and shoots first time hard and low, but De Gea somehow flicks it over the crossbar with his foot. This is good stuff from Saints, and De Gea has been the busier keeper throughout.
McQueen dispossess Rashford
United break quickly from another Saints corner and Rashford threatens to run in behind, but McQueen gets back and makes a crucial last-ditch tackle.
Saints enjoying a good spell...
Southampton have started the second half well. Ward-Prowse delivers a cross before McQueen gets down the opposite flank and wins a corner, which is headed clear by Lindelöf.
The second half is up and running...
United restart proceedings and we're back under way at Old Trafford.
HALF TIME: Manchester United 0-0 Southampton
It's goalless at the interval, and Saints have given as good as they've got at Old Trafford. The hosts lost top scorer Romelu Lukaku to injury early on after he headed over from United's best chance, while David De Gea has twice denied James Ward-Prowse and Wesley Hoedt has also gone close.
Boufal wins a free kick
Saints have the chance to take the sting out of the game after Lingard catches Boufal. Meanwhile, Long is limping, so it will be interesting to see whether he reappears for the second half.
There will be six added minutes...
As expected, there's plenty of time still to play before the interval. Saints have six added minutes to negotiate, as Matić warms the gloves of McCarthy from distance.
Yellow Card for Wesley Hoedt (Southampton)
The big Dutchman goes into the book for kicking the ball away after a stoppage in play.
United applying pressure...
Again Mkhitaryan's final ball lets him down with Lingard well placed in the box. Shaw then has a shot blocked, before Lingard heads inches wide from another Mkhitaryan cross.
McCarthy gathers Mkhitaryan's cross
United win two corners in succession and frustrate their fans by taking both kicks short. Eventually Mkhitaryan crosses from the second of them, but McCarthy shows good hands to claim the ball after it skipped up awkwardly off the greasy surface.
Seven minutes to go in the first half...
Saints have controlled their illustrious hosts for the most part, but there's still plenty of time left in this first period. Expect a minimum of five minutes to be added on after the Lukaku injury.
Dušan Tadić holds the ball up under pressure from Serbian international teammate Nemanja Matić.
United penalty appeal turned down
Referee Craig Pawson ignores loud appeals for a penalty as Lingard flicks the ball up on to Yoshida's hand, but the Saints skipper knew nothing about it. Clearly unintentional.
Rashford heads wide
Brilliant play down the right by Young, who digs out a superb cross from the byeline. McCarthy can't get to it, but the ball is just too high for Rashford behind him, who can only get the slightest touch as it skims off his head and away from danger.
McCarthy makes first save
Rashford's pace gets him in behind the Saints defence, who retreat to snuff out the first chance, but Mata steps on to the loose ball as it rolls invitingly to the edge of the box. McCarthy gets down sharply to save with his foot.
Yellow Card for Pierre-Emile Højbjerg (Southampton)
Shaw gets away from Ward-Prowse but not Højbjerg, who brings him down and becomes the first player to enter the book.
Hoedt heads wide
Saints win another corner. Ward-Prowse's delivery is perfect and Hoedt's run well timed, but the big defender cannot get enough on his header and glances it well wide from six yards.
United spurn counter-attack chance
Saints win two corners, but from the second of them United break at express pace. They have good numbers forward, but Mkhitaryan's final ball lets him down.
De Gea saves again
Long chases a long ball and wins a free kick for a clumsy push in the back by Lindelöf near the corner of the box. Ward-Prowse whips a shot towards the near post, but De Gea is in the right place to parry it for a corner.
Shaw crosses dangerously
Saints Academy graduate Shaw plays a neat one-two down the left and delivers a wonderful low cross just beyond the reach of Rashford. The ball is turned behind for a corner, but Saints eventually clear the danger.
United waste the free kick
Mata's eventual set-piece is not worth the wait from the home fans' point of view. He overhits his cross and it's out for a goal kick.
Lukaku receives treatment...
There's a long break in play here as Lukaku is flat out on the pitch receiving treatment. The Belgian striker took a bang on the head from Hoedt as the two jumped for a high ball.
Ward-Prowse denied by De Gea!
Boufal gets in behind the United defence and picks out Ward-Prowse with an intelligent cutback. The midfielder sets his sights and shoots towards the bottom corner, but De Gea dives full length to keep the Saints man at bay. Encouraging signs!
Lukaku goes close
It's an early chance for the hosts, as Pogba spreads the play to Mata, whose cross from the right is headed over by Lukaku from eight yards. He should have at least tested McCarthy in the Saints goal.
