Matt Targett BiographyLast updated 27 Sep 2016
A Southampton fan, who was born in Eastleigh, Targett joined the academy aged eight after being scouted at one of the Saints Foundation’s events.
Targett was drafted into the Under-21 squad a few weeks into the 2012/13 Barclays Under-21 Premier League campaign and held onto his spot during 2013/14.
With Luke Shaw, a good friend of Targett’s, moving on to Manchester United, he was given his chance in the first team during pre-season under manager Ronald Koeman.
Targett impressed, and despite the arrival of Ryan Bertrand, was given his opportunity to make his mark in and around the senior side. The left-back made his debut in the Capital One Cup win against Millwall in August 2014. His Premier League debut came on 27th September, as Saints beat QPR 2-1 at St Mary’s. In total, he made 12 appearances across the course of the campaign.
Targett captained England's under-20 side in a friendly against Turkey in October 2014 and scored for them against Portugal the following month. He was handed a call up for the Under-21s in 2015 and he went on to make his debut against the Czech Republic, where they won 1-0 in Prague. He was also named in the squad for the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals.
