Women add Haaland to goalkeeping unit
Southampton FC Women are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Benedicte Haaland, following her departure from Bristol City.
The 25-year-old arrives on the South Coast to bolster Marieanne Spacey-Cale’s goalkeeping options, adding experience from spending time in the Women’s Super League and across Europe.
Haaland, who has earned international caps for Norway at youth level, began her professional career in her native country with Arna-Bjørnar Fotball at just 17-years-old.
After five seasons in Norway’s top flight, which included a move to fellow Toppserien outfit Sandviken, she made the move to the Swiss Women’s Super League with FF Lugano.
From then she had her first brief spell in the WSL with Bristol City in the 2020/21 season, before spending further time in Iceland’s top division and with Hellas Verona in Italy’s Serie A.
Haaland made her return to the UK in 2022, signing for Scottish Women’s Premier League side Hibernian; in her most productive season, she played 31 games and saved a penalty to help her side beat fierce rivals Hearts.

Another brief return to Bristol City followed earlier this season, before she sealed the move to Saints.
“I’m very excited, I’ve heard great things about the club and it’s very good to be here." Haaland shared.
I’ve been following Southampton and have seen how quickly they’ve done well in the last few years. It's definitely something I wanted to be a part of.
Head Coach Marieanne Spacey-Cale added: “We’re really pleased to welcome Benedicte to the club, she’ll add some further experience to our goalkeeping unit and help provide real competition for Kayla and Beth.”
