Saints confirm Joe O'Brien-Whitmarsh signing
Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Joe O'Brien-Whitmarsh on a permanent deal from Cork City.
The highly rated 18-year-old midfielder arrives on the South Coast after a breakout season in the League of Ireland, joining on a deal until 2027 and linking up with the Under-21s.
Having risen through the ranks at Cork City, O'Brien-Whitmarsh only made his senior debut in March 2023 but went on to become a key player for The Rebels.
Despite his side suffering relegation, it was a positive personal campaign for the Republic or Ireland youth international as he scored four goals in 27 senior appearances and garnered interest from a handful of clubs in England.
After putting pen to paper on his Saints switch, O'Brien-Whitmarsh shared his delight in joining the club.
"I'm absolutely buzzing, this is a dream come true really. Playing back home in Ireland it's always been a dream to get a contract in England and it's here now and I'm happy.
"I'm a two-footed number 10, I love to get goals and chip in all over the place to create chances. It seems like an environment here that I can thrive in so I'm looking forward to it."
Academy Director Andy Goldie explained why the club were keen to bring Joe to Staplewood.
"Joe is a really positive addition to our Under-21s squad and Academy pathway, strengthening competition in our 8 and 10 positions.
"He's already demonstrated his abilities at first-team level in Ireland and we're looking forward to building, over the next three-and-a-half years, on the development and opportunities Cork City have provided him."
Head of Academy Recruitment, Jack Chapman, added:
"Joe is a bright, young player that has caught the eyes of a lot of clubs from around 15-16 years old. He's a determined personality who we're pleased to welcome and help showcase himself further.
"He compliments the players of a similar age already in the building, carrying the ball from midfield and scoring goals in and around the box. He'll enhance our competitive culture here and hopefully he flourishes like many of those around him."
