WHAT’S AT STAKE?

The cup tie provides an opportunity to build some confidence, with both sides suffering a difficult start to the Premier League season.

Both winless in four league outings, Saints got the better of Cardiff in a seven-goal while Everton cruised past Doncaster in round two, with focus now shifting to the round three encounter.

With big Premier League fixtures lying ahead at the weekend, Tuesday's tie could provide some timely momentum.

TEAM NEWS

Manager Russell Martin has already confirmed he'll make changes for the trip to Merseyside, having made 11 alterations for the second round trip to Cardiff last month.

Striker Ross Stewart made his comeback from injury off the bench on Saturday but isn't yet ready to start, the Saints boss confirmed.

One absentee will be captain Jack Stephens who will serve the first of a three-match ban having been sent off against Manchester United.

THE MANAGERS

Sean Dyche: To follow.

Russell Martin: "It’s the most important thing now, the Everton game. There will be changes, there will be players who need to stake a claim for their place in the team because we haven’t won, albeit there are so many positives, and there will be some players who need to build on today [Saturday], grow again and try to improve on their performance and learn again in our way of doing things."

Ryan Fraser: Back on the south coast as a permanent Saint, Fraser could be handed a first start since returning to the club.

An important figure in Russell Martin's promotion winning side last season, Wee Man will look to hit the ground running this time around.
