Martin excited for "huge game" at Ipswich

Russell Martin hopes to see his Southampton players channel the frustration they felt in dropping points against Middlesbrough into a positive response when Saints travel to Ipswich for an eagerly-anticipated Easter Monday showdown at Portman Road.

Saints looked on course for a third straight victory against Boro at St Mary’s, only to concede a 90th-minute equaliser scored by Emmanuel Latte Lath.

Results elsewhere saw Leicester beaten by Bristol City and Leeds draw at Watford, meaning Ipswich hit top spot with their 1-0 win at Blackburn.

Victory in Suffolk would move Saints within seven points of the leaders with two games in hand.

“I hope we can use the frustration we feel to help us on Monday,” Martin said, looking ahead after the Boro draw.

“It’s a huge game, it’s an exciting game. We have nine games left, I don’t think anything’s really changed in terms of how many games we need to win, but it’s one game ticked off, obviously.

“It’s an amazing game to go into on the back of this one and the frustration we’re all feeling.

“I have no doubt again we’ll be written off, but I think as the earlier result showed with Leicester, the end of the season does funny things to people.

“There’s so much to be pleased about with this performance, but to be really annoyed and angry about the result, and hopefully we can use that feeling on Monday.”
