Forever Saint award: Mick Channon
Southampton Football Club proudly presented its latest Forever Saint award to the legendary Mick Channon during half-time of Saturday’s home game against Manchester City.
The 73-year-old received the trophy during a pitchside ceremony in front of fans from two of his former clubs, while being joined by one of his grandsons.
Channon’s 608 Southampton appearances are second only to Terry Paine in club history, with the prolific former striker playing for Saints over two separate spells, the first of which included being a key part of the team that won the 1976 FA Cup.
His 228 goals for the club remain the all-time record, marking him out as one of the greatest ever to pull on the red-and-white striped shirt.
Channon is the latest recipient of the award, which is presented to ex-players, club servants and community champions who have made incredible contributions both at Saints and in the community.
He joins Franny Benali, Glenn Cockerill, John Corbett, Kelvin Davis, Steve Mills, Leon Crouch, Nigel Adkins, Dave Merrington and Sue Lopez in being celebrated so far this season.
Speaking to the crowd, Channon said: “It’s a great honour. I’m obviously thrilled. I had 16, 17, 18 great years here at Southampton. I’d like to say thank you very much to everybody.”
