Edozie: The atmosphere in the team is fantastic
Sam Edozie declared Southampton's dominant 4-0 win over Blackburn Rovers as the end of "a great week" both personally and for his side, who extended their unbeaten run to 14 Sky Bet Championship matches.
After coming on to score an important equaliser in midweek, Edozie was handed a start and repaid that faith with another goal to get Saints up and running in their return to winning ways.
"It's been a great week, and it's nice to see that my hard work is paying off." the 20-year-old explained with pride.
"I was doing my job pinning the goalkeeper and the ball's came in my way, I wasn't expecting it to, but I tried to direct it towards goal and it's come off and gone in, so I'm very happy.
"We were on the front foot for basically the whole half so to get that goal just before half-time was a real confidence boost and we came out in the second half and tried to top that."
In the second half, Stuart Armstrong doubled the lead before a stoppage time flurry from Sékou Mara and Charly Alcaraz sealed the win in style, which Edozie admitted was a target set from Russell Martin directly.
"That's what the manager's wanted from us, to win convincingly and put quite a few goals past an opponent.
"We've done that today so he's happy, the team's happy so we're looking forward to the next game."
Edozie's goal was his fourth of the season, a deserved reward for his effort behind the scenes, the winger explained.
"I've had to be patient but I kept working hard in training knowing my time was going to come sooner or later and I'll get a chance. I was given that chance so I made sure I took it.
"I've wanted to improve that [goal contributions] in my game and I still can with more goals and assists, so I'll continue to try improve those numbers.
"[For the group] it's a great run we're on, the atmosphere amongst the team is fantastic so hopefully we can keep building on this and win as many games as possible.
"The fans are definitely with us even when we're going through tough times, or playing out from the back, they stick with us and it's a big help that they do that."
