Downes devastated as Ipswich snatch draw
Southampton's Flynn Downes couldn't hide his disappointment at settling for a draw against Ipswich Town, but agreed the point was something to "kick on" from in the Premier League.
The midfielder wore the captains armband at St Mary's for the clash with fellow promoted side, and his former club, Ipswich Town.
With both teams chasing their first league win of the season, Saints surged into an early lead as youngster Tyler Dibling tucked home his first senior goal.
However, despite weathering a few Ipswich spells of danger, the visitors struck back right at the death to rescue a point through Sam Morsy's stoppage time rocket into the top corner.
"It's tough. It feels like a loss, to be honest." Downes admitted. "We've got to do better, we've got to see the game out. We have to defend like our lives depend on it, it's as simple as that really."
"We had spells, they had spells. We tried to score the second and if we did, that would have been the game.
"We didn't [score a second] so we've got to control the game better and stop them getting in our half, but we didn't and they ended up scoring."
As Downes summarised, Saints dug in to keep Ipswich out for 94 minutes, which made the manner of the 95th minute equaliser that much tougher to take.
"We had tough spells at the start of the game but second half, I didn't feel like they had anything for us. It felt so solid but, as I said, we've got to control games.
"I think we were getting there, we were trying to rush stuff then we were getting countered and I just thought, yeah, that's where you need a bit of experience.
"It's so hard when you've conceded last minute to look past it, but we've got a kick on now. We've got a lot to learn, but there's a lot of positives to take from today so we'll stick to it and we'll be all right."
