Three of Southampton's men's first team players were on international duty as Jan Bednarek kept a clean sheet in Poland's friendly victory over Germany.

The centre-back played the full 90 minutes in Warsaw as his nation were 1-0 winners thanks to a first half header from Arsenal's Jakub Kiwior.

Elsewhere, in UEFA EURO 2024 qualifying action, Gavin Bazunu and Will Smallbone were both handed starts as Republic of Ireland travelled to face Greece.

Goals in each half from Anastasios Bakasetas and Giorgos Masouras, either side of a Nathan Collins equaliser, condemned Saints' pair to a 2-1 defeat that leaves them fourth in Group B.

Smallbone did play his part in the Republic of Ireland goal, however, as he delivered a pinpoint corner that was flicked on by Brighton's Evan Ferguson and emphatically finished by Wolves' Collins at the far post.

Despite the defeat, Bazunu also took plaudits with several saves to earn Republic of Ireland's Player of the Match vote.
