Jake Hesketh made a cameo from the subs bench and helped MK Dons to their fifth consecutive victory and tighten their grip on an automatic promotion place in League Two with a 3-1 win over Macclesfield.
Hesketh won the club’s goal of the month competition in February but watched the lion’s share of the action unfold within the first hour as David Wheeler and Callum Brittain overturned Nathan Cameron’s first-half goal.
Kieran Agard netted 11 minutes from time to seal the points for the Dons who have a one-point advantage over fourth-place Mansfield with ten games remaining.
Further up the EFL, the Lancashire derby ended in disappointment for fellow midfielder Harrison Reed whose Blackburn Rovers side were beaten by play-off chasing Preston North End at Ewood Park.
Reed has featured in all but two of Rovers’ games this season but was replaced by forward Joe Nuttall after 63 minutes as Tony Mowbray’s team chased an equaliser to Daniel Johnson’s early strike.
In Spain, there were 1-0 defeats for both Sofiane Boufal and Guido Carrillo as their Celta Vigo and Léganes sides were beaten by Real Betis and Atletico Madrid respectively.
Boufal’s Celta dropped into the relegation zone by virtue of Jese Rodriguez’s 82nd-minute winner and Villarreal’s 2-0 win over Levante.
Striker Carrillo continued his rehabilitation from an ankle injury that kept him out of action for four matches in January in February, with a late appearance from the bench in Leganes’ 1-0 loss to Atletico. Mauricio Pellegrino’s nonetheless sit eight points clear of Celta.
Meanwhile, Jordy Clasie played the full 90 minutes as Feyenoord lost ground on their Champions League qualification rivals Ajax – for whom Dušan Tadić scored twice in a 4-0 thrashing of Fortuna Sittard - with a 1-1 draw at Vitesse Arnhem.
Orkun Kocku had given the visitors the lead only for Dauda Mohammed to equalise moments after half-time.
