Southampton's Under-23s left Blackburn empty handed after a stoppage time goal gave the hosts all three points in Premier League 2.
Despite a smart penalty save from Jack Rose, Saints were unable to take their chances at the opposite end, before full-back Jack Evans increased Rovers' lead at the top of the table with a 91st minute winner.
Radhi Jaïdi was clear about his side's aims prior to kick-off, after a good run of results had put them in contention to make the play-offs, but tonight's loss will now make that feat unlikely.
"It is disappointing to concede a goal last minute, when we thought that we could have nicked the three points," Jaïdi commented.
"I thought the first half we defended well, managed not to concede, Jack [Rose] makes two good saves. We said in the second half we needed to keep the ball better, I felt that we were erratic in possession.
"We were a bit quick to make the wrong decisions, and give the ball away, which kept us on the back foot. A draw wasn't going to be enough for us [to make the PL2 play-offs], so we changed the shape and went for the win.
"If you want to win the game you cannot concede a goal last minute. Good save for the penalty, but we came here to win the game to give us a chance of the play-offs.
"The boys will learn, and we carry on working hard to improve and get ourselves to a better level."
